Andy Sun is an Affiliate Associate Professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech.

Dr. Sun has a wide range of interests in both theory and applications of deterministic optimization and optimization under uncertainty.

  • On the deterministic side, Dr. Sun's recent research has focused on solving nonconvex optimization problems with a network structure, e.g. optimizing network flows with a nonconvex flow law, nonconvex quadratic programming on a graph, consensus optimization, and market matching. Dr. Sun has also been working on developing distributed algorithms for solving these nonconvex problems with convergence guarantees. Dr. Sun is also very interested in the problem of certifying the existence and uniqueness of solutions of polynomial systems with network structures using complex analysis and algebraic geometric methods. Dr. Sun has recently been interested in optimization with dynamical constraints, again with connection to network flow problems, where the flows are described by ODEs or PDEs.
  • On the uncertainty side, Dr. Sun has developed the first efficient algorithm for solving two-stage robust optimization problems that are much faster than Benders decomposition, cutting plane methods for multistage robust linear optimization much scalable than duality approach, models for decision-dependent uncertainty, and recently a fast exact algorithm (SDDiP) for multistage stochastic integer programming. His team is working toward developing efficient algorithms for multistage robust and stochastic programs with integer decisions.
  • On the application side, Dr. Sun has extensively worked on core optimization problems for electric power system operations and planning, and collaborated with major utility companies and system operators in the US. Dr. Sun's work on robust optimization for the Unit Commitment problem and strong convexification for optimal power flow problems have attracted substantial interests and follow-up research both in industry and academia.

Dr. Sun got his undergraduate degree from Tsinghua University in Beijing (major in Electronic Engineering), master degree in Media Arts and Sciences from MIT (working on analog computation and analog integrated circuit design), and doctoral degree in Operations Research from MIT. After PhD, Dr. Sun did a one-year postdoc at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY.

Pascal Van Hentenryck

Pascal Van Hentenryck is an A. Russell Chandler III Chair and Professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. Prior to this appointment, he was a professor of Computer Science at Brown University for about 20 years, he led the optimization research group (about 70 people) at National ICT Australia (NICTA) (until its merger with CSIRO), and was the Seth Bonder Collegiate Professor of Engineering at the University of Michigan. Van Hentenryck is also an Honorary Professor at the Australian National University.

Van Hentenryck is a Fellow of AAAI (the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence) and INFORMS (the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science). He has been awarded two honorary doctoral degrees from the University of Louvain and the university of Nantes, the IFORS Distinguished Lecturer Award, the Philip J. Bray Award for teaching excellence in the physical sciences at Brown University, the ACP Award for Research Excellence in Constraint Programming, the ICS INFORMS Prize for Research Excellence at the Intersection of Computer Science and Operations Research, and an NSF National Young Investigator Award. He received a Test of Time Award (20 years) from the Association of Logic Programming and numerous best paper awards, including at IJCAI and AAAI. Van Hentenryck has given plenary/semi-plenary talks at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (twice), the International Symposium on Mathematical Programming, the SIAM Optimization Conference, the Annual INFORMS Conference, NIPS, and many other conferences. Van Hentenryck is program co-chair of the AAAI’19 conference, a premier conference in Artificial Intelligence.

Van Hentenryck’s research focuses in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Operations Research. His current focus is to develop methodologies, algorithms, and systems for addressing challenging problems in mobility, energy systems, resilience, and privacy. In the past, his research focused on optimization and the design and implementation of innovative optimization systems, including the CHIP programming system (a Cosytec product), the foundation of all modern constraint programming systems and the optimization programming language OPL (now an IBM Product). Van Hentenryck has also worked on computational biology, numerical analysis, and programming languages, publishing in premier journals in these areas.

Van Hentenryck runs the Seth Bonder summer Camp in Computational and Data Science for middle- and high-school students every summer.

Enlu Zhou

Enlu Zhou is a professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. She received the B.S. degree with highest honors in electrical engineering from Zhejiang University, China, in 2004, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2009. Prior to joining Georgia Tech in 2013, she was an assistant professor in the Industrial & Enterprise Systems Engineering Department at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign from 2009-2013. She is a recipient of the Best Theoretical Paper award at the Winter Simulation Conference, AFOSR Young Investigator award, NSF CAREER award, and INFORMS Outstanding Simulation Publication Award. She has served as an associate editor for Journal of Simulation, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, and Operations Research. She is currently the Vice President and President-Elect of the INFORMS Simulation Society.

Mohit Singh

Mohit Singh is a Coca-Cola Foundation Professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering and the Director of the Algorithms and Randomness Center (ARC). Prior to this, he served as a researcher in the Theory Group at Microsoft Research in Redmond, Washington.

Singh’s research interests include discrete optimization, approximation algorithms, and convex optimization. His research is focused on optimization problems arising in cloud computing, logistics, network design, and machine learning.

Singh received the Tucker Prize in 2009 given by the Mathematical Optimization Society for an outstanding doctoral thesis on “Iterative Methods in Combinatorial Optimization.” He also received the best paper award for his work on the traveling salesman problem at the Annual Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS) in 2011.

Previously, Singh was an assistant professor at McGill University from 2010-2011 and a postdoctoral researcher at Microsoft Research, New England from 2008-2009.

He obtained his Ph.D. in 2008 from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University.

Alexander Shapiro

Alexander Shapiro is the A. Russell Chandler III Chair and Professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. 

Dr. Shapiro’s research interests are focused on stochastic programming, risk analysis, simulation based optimization, and multivariate statistical analysis.   In 2013 he was awarded Khachiyan Prize of INFORMS for lifetime achievements in optimization, and in 2018 he was a recipient of the Dantzig Prize awarded by the Mathematical Optimization Society and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. In 2020 he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. In 2021 he was a recipient of John von Neumann Theory Prize awarded by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). 

Dr. Shapiro served  on editorial board of a number of professional journals. He was an area editor (optimization) of the Operations Research Journal and the editor-in-chief of the Mathematical Programming, Series A, Journal

Roshan Vengazhiyil Joseph is a A. Russell Chandler III Chair and Professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech.

Dr. Joseph's research interests are in the broad areas of applied and computational statistics. A major focus of his research is in developing novel data analytic methods for solving complex engineering problems. He has several years of consulting experience in solving quality-related problems in industries.

Dr. Joseph's honors include Distinguished Dissertation Award from the University of Michigan in 2003, CAREER Award from National Science Foundation in 2005, Jack Youden Prize from ASQ in 2005, Coca-Cola Junior Chair Professorship from ISYE in 2008, Best Paper Award from IIE Transactions in 2009, Franz Edelman Laureate from INFORMS in 2017, Statistics in Physical & Engineering Sciences Award from ASA in 2019, SPAIG Award from the ASA in 2020, and Lloyd S. Nelson Award from ASQ in 2021. He is a Fellow of ASA (elected in 2012) and ASQ (elected in 2020). Currently he is serving as the Editor of Technometrics (2020-2022).

Dr. Joseph received a Ph.D. degree in Statistics from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2002 and holds an M.Tech. degree in Quality, Reliability, and Operations Research and a B.Tech. degree in Production Engineering and Management.

Juba Ziani is an Assistant Professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Prior to this, Juba was a Warren Center Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, hosted by Sampath Kannan, Michael Kearns, Aaron Roth, and Rakesh Vohra. Juba completed his Phd at Caltech in the Computing and Mathematical Sciences department, where he was advised by Katrina Ligett and Adam Wierman.

Juba studies the optimization, game theoretic, economic, ethical, and societal challenges that arise from transactions and interactions involving data. In particular, his research focuses on the design of markets for data, on data privacy with a focus on "differential privacy", on fairness in machine learning and decision-making, and on strategic considerations in machine learning.

Diego Cifuentes is an Assistant Professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. His research centers around the development of mathematical optimization methods, and the application of these methods in engineering areas such as machine learning, statistics, robotics, power systems, and computer vision. He also works in the theoretical analysis of optimization methods, leveraging geometric and combinatorial information to improve efficiency and robustness. Prior to joining ISyE, he served as an applied math instructor in MIT and as a postdoctoral researcher in the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences.

He earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT, and his B.S. in Mathematics and B.S. in Electronics Engineering from Universidad de los Andes.
