Dr. Realff’s broad research interests are in the areas of process design, simulation, and scheduling. His current research is focused on the design and operation of processes that minimize waste production by recovery of useful products from waste streams, and the design of processes based on biomass inputs. In particular, he is interested in carbon capture processes both from flue gas and dilute capture from air as well as the analysis and design of processes that use biomass.

Research Interests

  • Creating, understanding, and engineering nanoporous materials and membranes through innovative processing strategies.
  • Basic and applied problems in advanced separations, process intensification, energy production and storage, petro- and bio-based chemicals and materials, and critical materials.

Teaching Interests

Professor Nair’s teaching interests encompass core chemical engineering principles at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including separations, process safety engineering, and advanced materials. His instruction emphasizes foundational concepts and their practical applications, aiming to develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills. He actively engages students in learning processes that integrate theoretical knowledge with experimental understanding, supporting development across chemical engineering disciplines.

Akanksha Menon

Akanksha Menon

Dr. Akanksha Menon is an Assistant Professor in the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech. Prior to this, she was a Rosenfeld Postdoctoral Fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where she performed research on hybrid membrane-thermal desalination processes using solar energy, and she also contributed to the development of thermal energy storage materials. Dr. Menon completed her Ph.D. at Georgia Tech, where she focused on developing semiconducting polymers and new device architectures for thermoelectric energy harvesting.

Richard Simmons

Richard Simmons

Richard Simmons is currently a Principal Research Engineer and Fellow at Georgia Tech’s Strategic Energy Institute (SEI) where he directs cross-cutting energy projects with an emphasis on clean electric power, vehicle efficiency and alternative fuels. Simmons is also director of the Energy Policy and Innovation Center (EPICenter) whose objective is to perform research and outreach in energy policy and innovation with a distinctively regional perspective.

Sam Shelton

Dr. Sam Shelton is a nationally recognized expert in energy systems. He is the founding director of the Georgia Tech Strategic Energy Institute, an interdisciplinary technology development-based resource. The institute is actively engaged with industry to facilitate near-term, high-impact solutions to national and regional energy challenges. As a professor for 35 years, he developed in-class and web delivered undergraduate and graduate level energy technology courses.
